On the one hand this is of course a wwoofing blog. On the other hand, we haven't really wwoofed recently. Thus, the scarcity of entries as of late, and the utter lack of farming talk. There has been quiet discussions of engaging in some other types of activities along the way, namely skiing and/or perhaps golfing. But since we planned to farm, we didn't bring the necessary gear. Passing the Rockies without skiing last month was pretty devastating, but passing Pebble Beach without golfing yesterday was downright tragic. The gloomy weather and fact that the greens fees are $495 didn't help, but it also failed to negate the fact that playing at the venue of the 2010 U.S. Open only three months prior to the tournament is not too common an opportunity. Alas...Jen wasn't too upset.

We spent a day and a half exploring Carmel and Monterey Bay. They are more upscale towns that we expected, featuring boutique shops and high end restaurants. The crowds Jimmy Hendrix attracted during the famous 1967 Monterey Pop Festival probably aren't around anymore, but we enjoyed the seaside towns nonetheless. The stormy views along the 17-mile drive on the Monterey Peninsula were haunting but then the sun came out and it was exquisite. Next we drove up the Pacific Coast Highway (Highway #1) towards Sonoma County, where we will stay the next four days to learn about (and taste) wine. Dinner at a local restaurant featured organic ingredients and a bio-dynamic merlot. If our meals so far are any indication, the food in northern California promises to delight.

  4. Hi from Allendale!
Are you going to try to catch Greg in San Fran? And don't miss Santa Cruz - there's a reason Greg went to school there and hasn't strayed far.

I enjoy following your adventures, by
    the way.
