US & MR. & MRS. MEEGAN

LIVE OAK TREES

SAVANNA TOWN HALL

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE

What a day. We ate breakfast in Savannah, ate lunch on St. Simon Island, and ate dinner on Cumberland Island.

The first meal was in the historic downtown section of Savannah by Forsyth Park, site of the annual High Tide Ultimate Tournament. We got a bit lost heading into town due to some slightly incorrect directions but a kind fireman helped us regain our bearings. The Sentient Bean was the recommended establishment, and they sold fair trade coffee, and used local ingredients in their dishes. Their eggs came solely from Adcote Acres, where we slept last night. In theory a breakfast place that serves local food and fair trade ingredients should be excellent. But because it was really a coffee shop that served a few dishes instead of a proper restaurant, the food was meh. But the coffee was good. Although their refill policy seemed questionable. 50¢ for a refill is totally bogus. As was their "bus your own table" policy. Overall, we'd give it a 5 out of 10 stars.

Lunch was sandwiches and fruit at the Meegan's newest home, which is sitting on part of an old plantation on St. Simon Island. In classic Meegan fashion, they have the house all the way at the end of the street, near the end of the island. I don't know how they found it, but it is pretty spectacular. It had more than 3 balconies, a dock for their boat, a spiral staircase, and live oak trees everywhere. Mr. Meegan, who was the V.P. of Kraft, had an interesting perspective about organic food. He flat out suggested organic food lacked flavor. And Kraft was in the flavor business. Mrs. Meegan served us pound cake and chocolate ice cream for dessert. It was a treat to see them.

More driving, on what seemed like a long driving day, and we finally landed at the Fernandina Beach ferry dock. We boarded the Lucy R. Ferguson and met some of the staffers of the Greyfield Inn. The 40 minute boat ride was pleasant but chilly. We passed some paper plants along the mainland's coastline, and saw on the island a civil war fort and wild horses. We landed on Cumberland Island at dusk, drove to the Inn, and met additional staffers. It is great escape and we're very glad to be here. We already are wishing to stay longer and we've only been here but a few hours. They have big jugs of lemonade and big bowls of popcorn in the kitchen area for our enjoyment. What's not to love?
