ATTRACTING THE GOOD BUGS

FIELDS OF GOLD

LORNA SOWS SEEDS

The grizzly, grinding, gruesome, grotesque sound of chainsaws rudely ripped us out of our lovely slumber at 5 am; not our favorite way to start the day. The lumberjacks up the road got an early start on logging this morning and went at it well into the afternoon. Right now, the fire danger levels in Washington are very high and using chainsaws creates sparks that can potentially cause forest fires. By starting early when it's still damp out, the risk of igniting a fire is lessened and they are able to put in a full days work by noon. As they worked, the horrifying bone crushing sounds of the felled trees chilled us to our core. Didn't these people ever read The Lorax? Dr. Suess taught those of us who read this classic that cutting down trees for profit is neither sustainable nor advantageous in the long run. In a depressed area such as Lewis County, lumberjacking is one of the most sought after jobs. It's quite hard to fault the individuals working, as they are just doing their job to make money. However, we must consider the demand for timber and paper products in our society. If we all used a little less paper, napkins, toilet paper, and cardboard there would not be reason to cut down and destroy hundreds of thousands of acres of forest, which in turn destroys biodiversity and the homes of many outdoor creatures. Logging pollutes ground water, causes landslides, erodes soil at a far greater speed than nature intends, and causes unimaginable and unfathomable destruction. Growing up on the East Coast, we always knew paper came from trees, but being out here on the West Coast in the heart of logging country, it is impossible not to consider the repercussions of using so much paper on a daily basis. How did it ever come to this?

As we mentioned last week, Lorna is not only a farmer but is a certified reflexologist. She has been seeing clients for three years and although she has an established clientele, she is always looking to expand. From our brainstorming session, we concluded that putting a short commercial on a local TV station might be a good way to reach new potential customers. We helped her produce a cheesy, no budget fifteen second commercial today. Obviously Aaron shot, directed, produced, and edited said commercial, while Lorna, Chastity, and Jen starred in it. Aaron is horribly disappointed at the end result and sure, it's not the Budweiser frog campaign from several years back, but Lorna was thrilled with it. You can decide for yourself after viewing.
